How to Grow Executive Presence into Authentic Presence

By Lou Solomon

The New Measure of Presence

Executive presence used to mean command. The strong voice. The polished look. The leader who seemed certain at all times.

Those qualities still matter, but they are no longer enough. Today, people want leaders who can be clear without being distant, confident without being cold, and human without losing authority. They want leaders who can look them in the eye, tell the truth, and bring them into the conversation.

The journey from executive presence to authentic presence is not about becoming softer. It is about becoming more complete. It asks leaders to bring warmth, courage, listening, and storytelling into their leadership.

Presence Is Not a Performance

Many leaders misunderstand executive presence. They assume it is something to put on before a board meeting, town hall, or high-stakes presentation. They try to sound more polished, more serious, or more forceful than they are.

But real presence is not a costume. People can tell when a leader is performing their idea of leadership rather than communicating from who they are.

Presence begins when your words, tone, and body language are aligned with your intention. It grows when you are prepared enough to stop hiding behind notes, slides, or a role. The leaders we trust are not always the smoothest speakers in the room. They are the ones who seem fully there.

That kind of presence is not about perfection. It is about congruence. We believe you when the whole person shows up.

Executive Presence Today

In my 25 years of coaching leaders, I have identified at least 7 elements that make up the new appreciation of executive presence and its shift to authentic presence:

1. Warmth

Most leaders don’t realize that prioritizing warmth will give people an opportunity to trust them. People look for your humanity before your forcefulness. A few nonverbal signals show you are pleased to be in your company. Smile, face us, and extend a friendly greeting–and do it from the heart.

Once we trust you, we look to your confidence, decisiveness, track record for getting results, and command of difficult situations. These are not new; they are perennial traits of our respected leaders, and there are no substitutes.

3. Appearance

We are skeptical about individuals who are “over-polished” with accessories and trying to copy some idea they have of success. However, “polished” is about transmitting genuine vitality and enjoying comfort in one’s skin. Pleasing and appropriate dress is part of being polished as well.

4. Superior Speaking Skills

Stakeholders of every description look to leaders and their ability to speak as an indicator of a company’s health. The individual who can make a real connection and build trust with their audiences is the lightning rod for overall confidence in the company.

5. Vulnerability

It takes courage to step outside your comfort zone and meet expectations to be genuine while creating an environment where team members feel valued and safe to be themselves at work. When you share your imperfections, your team can be authentic, creative, and more productive.

When you are thinking of your agenda, you are absent, and it’s challenging to communicate with you. We can express ourselves more easily when we have your attention. Listening with generosity and without judgment is the mark of greatness, and it’s easier said than done.

7. Tell Your Story

You can empower others with what your life has taught you. For example, if you grew up overcoming an obstacle, sharing the wisdom you gained makes you human and builds relationships. If you worked the first part of your career in an unfulfilling role, sharing what you’ve found in your current role will reinforce your company’s culture. Note that inauthentic storytelling is the kiss of death. What’s important is that you share your life’s experience meaningfully and relevantly.

From Executive Presence to Authentic Presence

Executive presence still matters. Leaders need confidence, decisiveness, and the ability to speak clearly when the stakes are high. But the old version of executive presence can keep people at a distance if it is not balanced with authenticity.

Authentic presence brings the human being back into leadership. It allows a leader to be strong and approachable. It gives people access to your thinking, your values, and your story. When you communicate this way, people do not just hear your strategy. They begin to understand why it matters.

This does not mean oversharing at every opportunity. It means letting your communication convey who you are. A story told with purpose. A pause that makes room for others. A clear answer when people need certainty. A moment of honesty when things are hard.

Executive presence earns attention. Authentic presence earns trust. The most effective leaders learn to practice both.

The Presence People Trust

The future of leadership will belong to people who can communicate with both strength and humanity. We still need leaders who can make decisions, guide strategy, and stand steady under pressure. We also need leaders who can listen, connect, and help people feel part of something worth building.

Presence is personal. It is not about copying someone else’s style or performing a version of leadership that does not belong to you. It is about integrating your experience, stories, and courage into the way you communicate.

When leaders develop authentic presence, they become easier to trust and harder to forget. Their voice carries more than authority. It carries meaning.

At Interact Studio, we help leaders discover that kind of presence and learn how to use it when it matters most.
